Off to a Good Start
Apr 09, 2007 – 12:04PMI'm off to a pretty good start for April. I won the $100 freezeout on PokerStars on Friday night, and have made 2-3 other final tables. I came really close to nailing a big score last night too finishing 20th in the bodog $100k when my AA fell to KK all in pre-flop and lost a coin flip on UB in the 200k with 14 left. I feel like I'm playing pretty well this month so far, and so far the results are showing that as well. I've actually cut back on the amount of tournaments I'm playing this month in the hopes that I'll get more time to play in some cash games, but I've been finishing so strong in the tournaments I have been playing I haven't played much cash. I'm trying a slightly different approach to my schedule this month so we'll see how it goes.
I looked back and did some analysis and noticed that my hourly rate in tournaments where the overall prize pool was less than $25k was significantly less than what I could make playing mid-stakes cash games. To be fair, even the amount I make in the bigger tournaments is pretty much break even with cash games, but I can play more tournaments at the same time than I can cash games without reducing my effectiveness, so my hourly rate is slightly better in tournaments while my hourly rate per table is better in cash. With that in mind I stopped playing the 20 and 30 dollar rebuys on Full Tilt, as well as their 18k guaranteed $75 at night. I also stopped playing in the UB $100 freezeout late night and their $30 rebuy as well, as both usually only get around $17k in prize pools. Once I get down to less than 4 tournaments I start adding some cash games into the mix, and so far the results have been good, although as I said I've been doing well enough in tournaments so far this month that I really haven't played a whole lot of cash. I won't pull up any cash tables if I'm in the money or nearly in the money in a tournament so I can really focus, and I've been getting deep a lot lately. I'll keep everyone updated, but so far the month is off to a very good start.
